Pharmaceutical company Largo acquired by SC company; 36 layoffs planned

A pharmaceutical company in Largo plans dozens of layoffs after it is acquired by a South Carolina firm.

VistaPharm, Inc., which employs 177 people at its headquarters at 7265 Ulmerton Road, was recently sold to PAI Pharma of Greenville, SC In a notice to the state, VistaPharm said PAI would move products and equipment from Largo in Greenville, “as determined to be more cost effective and efficient to operate from the South Carolina facility.

At least 36 employees will be laid off starting around Jan. 13, with more to come in 2023. VistaPharm said some employees will be offered a chance to relocate, but many will choose to stay in Tampa Bay and be laid off.

VistaPharm manufactures and distributes liquid generic medications, including opioid treatments available at more than 1,450 clinics across the United States. PAI Pharma manufactures a range of liquid medicines, syrups and elixirs.

Further details on the sale were not immediately available. Calls and emails to VistaPharm and PAI Pharma were not returned Wednesday morning.

Last week, layoffs were announced at two other Pinellas County workplaces: BayFirst Financial of St. Petersburg, which cut at least 58 employees at his office in Clearwater and elsewhere; and DZS Inc., based in Dallas, Texas, who will cut 58 as it closes its Seminole manufacturing plant.
